Five mindsets that will transform your leadership

In 2003, Henry Mintzberg and Jonathan Gosling wrote a ground-breaking article in the Harvard Business Review: “The Five Minds of Manager”.  They identified (based on observation) five managerial mindsets that help executives succeed in a global context: Reflective, Analytical, Worldly, Collaborative, and Action. Over 20 years later, the five mindsets are more relevant than ever before. Learn what it means to incorporate reflection in your everyday work and life. Understand when best to use analysis, what it means to be worldly and how to collaborate more effectively (with people, technology, and nature).  Be the catalyst for action and learn how to better manage change and innovation in your organization. During this webinar Prof. Mintzberg and Prof. Gosling will be interviewed by global C-Suite executive coach and businessman David Noble, who will help us revisit The Five Minds of a Manager and discuss their relevance for today’s executives. There was an open Q&A for the last half of the webinar.

David Noble is globally trusted by CEOs and their teams, boards of directors, investors, and star athletes to help them crack high-stakes leadership challenges. He and Carol Kauffman co-authored “Real Time Leadership: how to find your winning moves when the stakes are high,” published by Harvard Business Review Press in 2023 (www.rtlinstitute.com). David is also a Senior Advisor to the Institute of Coaching (affiliated with Harvard Medical School), and in 2023, Thinkers50 shortlisted him as one of the top 8 coaches in the world due to his international impact. Prior to joining Egon Zehnder, David was a Managing Partner at Oliver Wyman in New York, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Previously he was the global practice leader for financial services at Kearney, an Executive Vice President of Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management business, and a Senior Vice President at RBC. David is an alumnus of the International Masters Program for Managers, founded by Prof. Mintzberg and Prof. Gosling.
Jonathan Gosling is Emeritus Professor of Leadership Studies at the University of Exeter, having been Chair and Director of the Centre for Leadership Studies there for 12 years. Prior to that he directed the Strategic Leaders Unit at Lancaster University Management School. He is a visiting Professor at Renmin University of China (School of Philosophy ), held the Otto Mønsted Visiting Professorship at Copenhagen Business School, and has been a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Leadership Development at INSEAD, as well as a Visiting Professor at McGill University, Quebec; Auckland University in New Zealand, Lund University, Sweden and at Bristol Leadership and Change Centre (BLCC) at the University of West of England. He co-founded, with Henry Mintzberg, a new approach to management education, the International Masters in Practising Management
Henry Mintzberg is the Cleghorn Professor of Management Studies at McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management. He has been called influential, innovative, iconoclast in the field of management. Fast Company even likened him to Mick Jagger. Of course, Mick Jagger was never named one of the top management thinkers in the world, largely by attacking the foundations of the modern managerial profession – the MBA. Management education, according to Mintzberg, should be given to those working as managers, as opposed to the current practice of training young students with no practical experience in management theory. According to Mintzberg “Leadership, like swimming, cannot be learned by reading about it.” He has written over 25 books, including the controversial Managers Not MBAs and iconoclastic Strategy Bites Back, which made the business world sit up and take notice of the flaws in how they think. He’s made it his personal mission to reform the way managers are educated. Mintzberg helped design the International Masters in Practicing Management, a program that has since inspired other executive programs, which seek to expose practicing executives to new ways of thinking through the five mindsets of a manager.
