Henry Mintzberg’s 35-year career in making sense of managerial work reached another milestone at the end of 2009 with the publication of his book’Managing’. Following the buzz surrounding ‘Managers not MBAs’—which turned the spotlight on the limitations of MBA education and contrasted it with the IMPM—his latest book builds on his long-term interest in the frequent disconnections between ‘leadership’ and ‘management’, and between strategy and planning on the one hand and day-to-day operations and actions on the other.
The IMPM is strongly influenced by Mintzberg’s research into managing, and like the man himself it is strongly focused on the practice of management, and on ways of developing effective management practice, as distinct from the very analytical and detached approach to management of most MBA programs.
